Have you ever stood in front of the mirror and said to yourself "You can do it!" or "I’m beautiful, strong, and healthy!" or "I’m happy!", or even "I’m attractive!"? Did you know that using affirmations like these could influence and even reprogram your subconscious?
Thoughts can directly influence how you feel. If you change your thoughts, you also change your feelings. A healthy mind goes hand in hand with a healthy body. Any suggestions you make to yourself while in a state of deep relaxation will penetrate deep into your mind, and there they thoughts will continue to resonate for a very long time.
An affirmation is nothing more than a positive self-suggestion. It is a way to influence your thoughts, self-image, health, and self-esteem. It is important to choose for a positive affirmation in the present tense. "I am healthy" is better than "I want to be healthy." The reason for this is because the subconscious takes everything literally, and you want to avoid spending the rest of your life "wanting" something rather than "having" it. Be careful not to formulate the affirmation too literally. To do so can be counterproductive. A good example of a positive affirmation is a line from the Beatles’ song "Getting Better," which goes like this: "it’s getting better all the time." This line is borrowed from the affirmation theory by Émile Coué, also called autosuggestion. According to Coué affirmations work because they influence self-image directly, bypassing conscious thought. If you consciously strive for change, you can sabotage your own progress by asking yourself questions, such as "Will this work?", "Am I doing this right?", or "Is it working yet?"
What is the best time to do affirmations?
Affirmations are most effective when you are deeply relaxed. Scientists who measure brain waves have recorded four patterns. Beta waves have the highest frequency and are related to active thinking and doing. When you are relaxed the brain emits slower rhythmic alpha waves. At this point the brain is more receptive to signals from the outside. The alpha level equates to your subconscious, where you observe, record, and store experiences.
As relaxation deepens theta waves take over. The theta level of consciousness is often accompanied by dream images. This stage of relaxation stimulates memory and creative imagination. When you finally go into a deep sleep mode the brain emits delta waves. It is in the alpha and theta state, however, that you are most open to words, images, and suggestions. That is why a mixture of the alpha and theta state of consciousness is the ideal environment to practice visualization and affirmation.
