If so, you might be in need of some chakra balancing.

Read on to learn more about using aromatherapy to balance your chakras and improve your overall quality of life and well-being.

What Are Chakras?

Before we get into what you can do to balance them, let’s first talk briefly about the chakras.

In your body, there is believed to be an energy system made up seven chakras, or energy centers.

The seven chakras lie vertically along the spine. They correspond to different physiological, psychological, and spiritual characteristics of the mind and body.

When the chakras are all unblocked and balanced, energy is able to flow freely in and out of the body. When the chakras are not balanced, blockages can occur. If this happens, you may experience physical or psychological problems as a result.

The Seven Chakras

The seven chakras of the body are described below.

1. Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is also known in Sanskrit as the Muladhara. It is located at the base of your spine, near the tail bone. None of the other chakras can be balanced if this one is not.

The Root Chakra is linked to digestion and the kidneys, anus, and prostate. It is responsible for security, survival, and livelihood.

People with an unbalanced Root Chakra often experience digestive problems. They might also feel ungrounded, confused, anxious, depressed, or unable to move forward.

2. Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra, or Swadhisthana, is located in the lower abdomen, about 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches inward.

The Sacral Chakra is linked to the genitals, reproductive system, stomach and urinary tract.

It is responsible for our sexuality, creativity, emotions, and pleasure.

People with an unbalanced Sacral Chakra will often experience a decreased libido, lowered immune system, and feelings of guilt or shyness.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra — the Manipura in Sanskrit — is located around the navel.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is linked to several internal organs. This includes the pancreas, adrenal glands, liver, and intestines. It is responsible for the ego, energy, willpower, and success.

If your Solar Plexus Chakra is unbalanced, you might experience physical illnesses, like diabetes and pancreatitis. You might also suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of confidence.

4. Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra, or Anahata, is located in the chest and is linked to the heart, lungs, blood, and skin.

The Heart Chakra is responsible for feelings of love and compassion. It is also linked with wisdom and nurturing.

If your Heart Chakra is unbalanced, you might suffer from heart disease or back pain. You might also have increased feelings of jealousy or trust issues.

5. Throat Chakra

As the name suggests, the Throat Chakra — Vishuddha in Sanskrit — is located in the throat.

It is linked to the thyroid gland, vocal cords, esophagus, and trachea.

The Throat Chakra is responsible for truthfulness, communication, creative expression, and faith. If it is unbalanced, you might experience thyroid problems, laryngitis, addictive behaviors, or increased feelings of suspicion.

6. Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra, also known as Ajna, is located in the middle of the forehead.

The Third Eye Chakra is linked to the pineal gland, pituitary gland, brain, and eyes. It is responsible for understanding, intuition, clairvoyance, and insight.

An unbalanced Third Eye Chakra can lead to psychosis, headaches, and feelings of detachment or confusion.

7. Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra — Sahasrara — is located at the top of the head.

It is linked to the pineal gland, pituitary gland, brain, and nervous system. The Crown Chakra is responsible for awareness, unity, duality, and a connection to a higher consciousness.

People with an unbalanced Crown Chakra might experience chronic illnesses. They may also deal with feelings of detachment, apathy, and materialism.

Chakra Balancing With Aromatherapy

Now that you know a bit more about the seven chakras, it’s time to learn about how to balance each one with aromatherapy.

Different aromatic essential oils correspond to different chakras. They can be used to energize sluggish chakras and quiet overactive ones.

Which oils should be used for each chakra?

Root Chakra

Patchouli oil and vetiver can both be rubbed on the feet to calm an overactive Root Chakra.

Nutmeg, on the other hand, can be used to help activate a more sluggish chakra. When your Root Chakra is more balanced, you can maintain that sense of rootedness with a balancing oil like bergamot.

Sacral Chakra

To boost your sexual and reproductive energies, use a spicy oil like cardamom.

Ylang Ylang oil can be used to calm an overactive Sacral Chakra.

Sandalwood and sweet orange oils are both ideal for maintaining a balanced Sacral Chakra.

Solar Plexus Chakra

Cinnamon, eucalyptus, and juniper berry can all be used along with a gentle massage of the abdomen to activate the Solar Plexus Chakra.

To calm an overactive solar plexus, try vetiver or helichrysum. Grapefruit and lemon are ideal for balancing a Solar Plexus Chakra that is functioning well.

Heart Chakra

Rose oil applied to the breast bone or middle of the back enhances feelings of love and romance. It is also good for alleviating depression and insomnia.

Lavender and sweet marjoram, on the other hand, will help calm the Heart Chakra.

To maintain balance in the Heart Chakra, regularly apply geranium essential oil.

Throat Chakra

Eucalyptus and lemon can both be used to clear sinuses and cleanse the Throat Chakra.

To calm an overactive Throat Chakra, try vanilla or Roman chamomile. Coriander seed is a good balancing oil for this chakra.

Third Eye Chakra

If you’re experiencing headaches or need to calm the Third Eye Chakra, use lavender oil or German chamomile.

Rosemary oil is great for activating a sluggish Third Eye Chakra. Frankincense and sandalwood can both be used to balance the Third Eye.

Crown Chakra

Calming aromatherapy oils for the Crown Chakra include neroli and vanilla.

Spicy sweet lavandin helps to clarify a low functioning Crown Chakra.

In addition to balancing the third eye, Frankincense can also be used to balance the Crown Chakra.

Other Ways To Balance Chakras

Essential oils are great for chakra balancing, but there are a few other practices that you can use to complement the use of aromatherapy.

Meditation Or Prayer With Crystals

Crystals can amplify or absorb energy to help with chakra balancing.

The type of crystal you meditate or pray with will depend on the specific chakra you’re trying to balance.

Each chakra has a color that corresponds to it. For example, the Throat Chakra is associated with the color blue. So, meditating with a blue crystal can help balance the Throat Chakra.

Mediation With A Singing Bowl

In addition to meditating with essential oils or crystals, you can also use a singing bowl.

Each of your chakras is also associated with a particular musical sound.

For example, the musical note “D” corresponds with the Sacral Chakra. When you meditate while playing a certain note on a singing bowl, you can balance the chakra that matches that note.
